Most people will sit on the toilet or stand while slightly squatting to insert a tampon, but you can also try lying down or propping one foot on a step or other raised surface ex. Hold the tampon at the grip the smaller part right above the plunger and place the tip of the tampon at your vaginal opening. Once the tip is in place, aim the tampon toward your lower back, not straight up. Slowly insert the tampon applicator from the tip, all the way to the grip. The string will be the only thing left sticking out of your vagina.

You did it! Keep reading to learn how to remove the tampon. If that happens, just use your finger to push the tampon farther in, and that usually fixes it! Your hymen may have a variation that makes it difficult to insert a tampon. The hymen is a thin and stretchy rim of tissue that surrounds the vaginal opening. Most hymens have a single opening in the middle that a tampon can easily pass through, but some have a very small opening or a septum which is a band of tissue that partially blocks the opening.

Most commonly, this condition develops after an injury or traumatic experience that may or may not involve the vagina. Vaginismus is not something you can control, but it IS something that can go away with treatment. Step 2. Check absorbency of the tampon. Remove the wrapper. Tear away the gold coloured tear string and unwrap the bottom half of the plastic cover. Carefully unwind the tampon string see picture 1.

Hold the string firmly, removing the remaining piece of the plastic cover, trying not to handle the main part of the tampon more than you need. The good news here? This really depends. Others prefer to let it hang out on their underwear for easy removal. If you decide to push the string inside your vagina — instead of just inside your labia — be aware that you might have a harder time locating the string for removal later on. At the very least, you might feel the string brush up against the side of your labia. With movement and walking, it might even move around and settle into a more comfortable position after a while.

If you find yourself bleeding through a tampon before 4 hours, you might want to try a thicker absorbency. If you wear it longer than 8 hours, you put yourself at risk for toxic shock syndrome TSS. The good news is that the FDA has reported a significant decline in TSS cases associated with tampons over the past 20 years.

To decrease your risk for TSS, make sure to not wear your tampon longer than recommended. Next, get into the same comfortable position you chose before.
